Rhode Island is one of the original colonies of US of america. Rhode Island is classified as one of the new England colonies, located on the Atlantic ocean in the Northern states. This colony was established in 1636, Roger Williams was its founder and other colonist. Rhode Island main city was Providence. This colony is one the most liberated colony. They were coming together more as a colony, the fact that they had meeting to make decision may have helped a lot .
Roger Williams along with other colonist such as Anne Hutchinson were the founders of Rhode island. They were forced into exiled from the Massachusetts bay colony for beliefs about separation of church and freedom of religion. Exile forced settlers to flee with the Narragansett Indians and formed providence in 1636. Later Roger and Anne converge with other settlements, then with the permission from New England they formed Rhode Island. Rhode island Government was a charter colony, which means the people had certain rights or privileged, but must be approved. Religion was free of choice, which means all religion was accepted.
Rhode Island was really agriculturally based. Compared to the other regions Rhode Island were very cold.The climate consisted of short summers and long cold winters compared to the other regions. Geography featured hills, mountains and rivers. Ironically its a surprised how most settlers farmed in that weather condition. Most Colonist were farmers and had owned slaves on plantations. The weather was so cold planting crops were difficult and unsuitable for crops. For more food sources, most people fished bass, sturgeon, and even whales.
Rhode islanders relationship with Indians at first were uneasy, but did not end in bloodshed. Colonist were at peace with the Indians at the most part. Indians taught them essential to survive in day to day life.
Like many colonies Rhode Island relied on trade and slave Labor. At some point in time they were the only colony to use slaves for both labor and trade. They traded rum, whale prod, furs, maple syrup, fur and horses my ship. Also things like glass, metal, beads, small pelts and hatchets. Trade was very significant in the New England colonies. Trade was mandatory for economic growth.
